At the end of April, The Bureau of Labor Statistics recorded 3,400 oil and gas jobs added since February. Over the entire United States, that number is closer to 9,000 new jobs. In Oklahoma, recent numbers indicate that the last two months have seen the largest employment gain in the energy sector in nearly 30 years.

In other words, it’s a good time to be in the oil and gas industry.

Qualified Employees Are Coming up Short

Unfortunately, this swell of employment opportunities within the industry comes at the end of a long drought. As a result, several small oil and gas companies and thousands of industry employees have not only found themselves out of work, they’ve all but given up hope of finding employment in their field. That’s a problem for drillers throughout the United States.

In the first quarter of 2017, oil and gas companies underspent on their collective budgets by as much as $2.5 billion. Why? They couldn’t find enough competent fracking crews to handle the work. Some outlets believe that if this employment need isn’t met soon it could have grim implications moving into next year.
